Double Fine has confirmed that Thank You Bus Driver arrives on October 14, marking the studio’s first release since it split from Xbox earlier in the summer of 2026. The game is heading to Steam, GOG, and itch.io, with no console versions announced.

The timing is notable given how recently the game surfaced. Double Fine only announced Thank You Bus Driver a few weeks before confirming this release date, following Xbox’s studio restructuring, which spun off five first-party developers including Double Fine and set plans for roughly 3,200 staff layoffs across the division by next summer. Double Fine itself cut a quarter of its own workforce in the fallout.
Thank You Bus Driver is a black-and-white game in which players ferry passengers to their stops within a time limit while keeping order on board. Double Fine describes it as a
“chaotic bus driving game where you take on the role of a town’s bus driver just trying to get through the day with minimal rule breaking and maximum gratitude.”
Tim Schafer, Double Fine’s founder and the designer behind much of the studio’s back catalogue, has commented on the split so far. He’s said there’s no bad blood with Xbox, and remains fond of Game Pass as a way of getting oddball games like this one in front of players who’d otherwise balk at a $70 price tag for something built around a walking lighthouse or a slap-happy bus route.
The rule-enforcement half of the game is where Thank You Bus Driver gets its bite. As passengers break whatever rules are in effect for the day, players turn around and slap them across the face with exaggerated, freakishly long arms, giving the whole thing an unexpected dash of Papers, Please layered over the arcade driving.
It’s also the debut release under Double Fine Action Labs, a new label the studio describes as home to
that can come together far quicker than a typical Double Fine production. The studio’s ongoing Amnesia Fortnight Kickstarter campaign will likely feed another entry into the Action Labs pipeline down the line, though nothing beyond Thank You Bus Driver has been confirmed yet.

Thank You Bus Driver was announced only a few weeks before Double Fine confirmed its release date, a fast turnaround by the standards of a studio better known for multi-year efforts like Psychonauts 2. Whether it’s a one-off palate cleanser or the new normal for a leaner, independent Double Fine remains to be seen, but it’s a lively first move.
