The Backrooms movie left viewers with plenty of questions thanks to its wild premise, and director Kane Parsons says he already has an ending in mind, but it'll be a limited series that takes the story there.
The horror phenomenon began with a 2019 image of an empty, yellow room before growing into an online creepypasta about slipping out of reality and becoming trapped in an endless maze of familiar but unsettling spaces.
Parsons brought his version of the Backrooms to YouTube back in 2022, and his first found-footage video has since drawn around 80 million views, helping turn the concept into a much bigger online phenomenon.
Shortly after, his A24 film arrived in May 2026, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark, a furniture store owner who discovers the maze, and Renate Reinsve as Mary, his therapist. The film was a major box office hit, but Parsons sees it as part of a longer story, with the official ending being told in a series.
Kane Parsons wants a Backrooms series for his “main ending”
Speaking to Deadline, Parsons said: “I’ve said since the very beginning that the dream scenario would be a limited series for Backrooms to get to the main ending.”
Of course, he kept the details of his planned ending to himself, but said the larger story has been mapped out, revealing: “I can’t say anything, but there’s been a very set arc to the whole thing from the beginning, and I just feel absurdly excited at the idea of actually being able to follow through on all of it.”
While he didn't explain when the "main ending" would be coming to screens, he did hint that “there’s a few things that I would love to talk about when I can soon," so whether that's the reported sequel or limited series is yet to be seen.
For those that don't know the ending of the film, the movie ends with the monstrous copy of Clark killing him. Mary escapes the maze, only to be taken in by Async, the organization investigating it, and a final scene shows a distorted copy of Mary still inside the Backrooms, leaving her fate and the nature of the place unresolved.
That leaves room for Parsons to continue his version of the viral story, hopefully allowing fans the chance to see its official ending.
