A Pokémon TCG card just sold for an almost incomprehensible $8.4 million at auction – and no, it isn’t the mythical Illustrator Pikachu. A 2015 Japanese Art Academy Pikachu illustrated by Y. Fujishima sold for $8.4 million in Fanatics Collect’s latest Weekly Sunday Auction. The staggering result appears to make it the second-most expensive Pokémon card ever publicly sold, trailing only the $16.49 million PSA 10 Illustrator Pikachu formerly owned by Logan Paul.
Fanatics Collect lists the card as selling on Sept. 28 after attracting 64 bids. The $8.4 million final price includes buyer’s premium and represents an extraordinary new benchmark for a Pokémon card that, despite its extreme rarity, has never enjoyed the same mainstream recognition as the TCG’s most notable trophy cards.
What Is the $8.4 Million Art Academy Pikachu?
The Art Academy Pikachu originates from the Pokémon Art Academy Competition held in late 2014 and early 2015. Entrants used the Nintendo 3DS game Pokémon Art Academy to create their own Pokémon illustrations, with Japanese participants challenged to draw either Pikachu in costume or one of their favorite Pokémon.
Y. Fujishima was one of five Japanese winners selected in the Pikachu category, with the resulting promo depicting a particularly well-prepared Pikachu trudging through the rain with a vivid orange umbrella, a bright-red coat that happens to conveniently cover its tail, and a matching red hat covering its ears (now that's cute). Each winner received 100 copies of a promo Pokémon TCG card featuring their artwork, and the cards were never given a conventional retail release.
That tiny original distribution has made the Art Academy promos some of the rarest Pokémon cards in existence. Despite a worldwide distribution of just 100 copies, the Fujishima Pikachu has an unusually large PSA 10 population. PSA currently records 57 examples in Gem Mint condition, suggesting that a significant portion of the cards awarded to the contest winner were exceptionally well preserved.
Even so, nothing in the card’s previous sales history remotely suggested an $8.4 million payday was incoming. Another PSA 10 copy sold through Heritage Auctions for $135,000 in June, while the most recent prior sale through Fanatics Collect fetched just $17,400 in July 2025. In fact, Fanatics’ recorded sales of a PSA 10 Fujishima Pikachu had never topped $20,000 before this latest auction.
Of course, the most valuable cards from Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration pale in comparison to an $8.4 million graded slab, but that set has only just arrived in collectors’ hands, so its biggest chase cards have yet to establish a meaningful graded market of their own.
The latest sale leaves Fujishima’s raincoat-garbed Pikachu in some extraordinary company. Logan Paul’s PSA 10 Illustrator Pikachu sold for $16.492 million earlier this year, setting a Guinness World Record for the most expensive trading card ever sold at auction. Paul had previously acquired the one-of-a-kind PSA 10 for $5.275 million in 2021.
At $8.4 million, the Art Academy Pikachu would comfortably eclipse that earlier transaction and appears to stand behind only the $16.492 million PSA 10 Illustrator among publicly recorded Pokémon card sales.
This skyscraping sale arrives amid an astonishing run at the very top of the Pokémon TCG secondary market. Rare trophy cards, vintage grails, and ultra-low-population cards have repeatedly smashed previous benchmarks in 2026, with several major Pokémon sales reaching seven figures in recent months.
Still, an $8.4 million Pokémon card occupies exceedingly rarefied air. The PSA 10 Illustrator Pikachu remains the most valuable Pokémon card of all time. But the adorably illustrated Art Academy Fujishima Pikachu has now carved out a rather remarkable place immediately behind it.
