The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Officially Confirms Brand-New Feature Not in the Original

    September 29, 2026
    Source Game Rant gamerant.com

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of the most influential games in Nintendo's history, but revisiting it decades later also shows how much adventure games have changed, with a new feature added to modernize the upcoming game. Modern Zelda games give players plenty of ways to keep track of objectives, locations, and progress, while older games were often much less direct about what Link was supposed to do next. Nintendo is now adding a new feature to Zelda: Ocarina of Time that should make that part of the adventure easier to follow.

The original Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was designed around exploration and figuring things out along the way. Players were expected to remember conversations, locations, items, and clues as they worked their way through Hyrule, with the game offering considerably less guidance than many modern adventure games. Nintendo's new version keeps the original adventure game intact while adding at least one quality-of-life improvement.

Ocarina of Time's New Trails of Time Feature is a Modern QoL Expectation

Nintendo has now officially confirmed Trails of Time, a brand-new feature not found in the original Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The feature allows players to confirm their next objective or look back at their adventures so far. Instead of remembering every detail of Link's journey, players will have a dedicated way to see what they are currently working toward and review what has already happened. In essence, it's a quest log—something fans have come to expect from the genre and is in most modern games, including the open-world game Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Trails of Time also has a visual element that changes as players progress through The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Nintendo says a large tapestry painting gradually fills up throughout the adventure, as seen in the original Zelda: Ocarina of Time Switch 2 trailer, giving players a visual record of their progress. It is a small addition on paper, but it gives the feature a second purpose beyond simply telling players what to do next.

The feature should be especially useful for players returning to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time after years away from the original. A player can stop playing for a while and return without necessarily having to remember exactly where the adventure left off, making it easier to pick the game back up. After all, it's going toe-to-toe in November with one of the biggest releases of all time: Ocarina of Time vs. GTA 6 is happening in November 2026.

Trails of Time is ultimately a good example of how Nintendo can make changes to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time without changing the core game itself. The original game never had an objective tracker or a tapestry that documented Link's journey, but the new feature gives players both in a way that fits naturally around the existing 10/10 masterpiece.
