Apple has a new feature that allows users to create ‘custom cards’ for Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, but it doesn’t work everywhere.
Apple Pay has been around for well over 10 years now, but some stores are still slow to adopt it. It provides greater convenience than needing to carry around a wallet or purse with physical cards, but it isn’t just limited to money either.
Apple’s Wallet feature allows you to store gym memberships, airline tickets, loyalty cards, and even event tickets inside as well. However, just like the slow uptake with Apple Pay, some places stick to their own apps and ways of doing things.
With the launch of iOS 27, Apple Wallet now allows users to create ‘custom cards’ from pretty much every physical card you own.
Apple now has custom passes so you can ditch physical cards
As CNET pointed out, the create “custom Wallet items” using Apple’s Visual Intelligence. You can scan physical cards, QR codes, barcodes, and other items to create a digital card.
You simply go into your wallet app, select the ‘create a pass’ option, and then use the AI to scan your designated item. It’ll then fit the details into a template, allowing you to customise the look of it and what it is going to be used for.
Some social media users have already managed to convert library cards and gym memberships with the feature, while others have ditched third-party apps that did the same job.

While this might seem like a massive time saver, some users have already noted they’ve experienced headaches with it.
“I tried that with the Costco membership. They almost called a supervisor on me before I pulled out the actual membership card,” one Redditor said.
“I used it for LA Fitness. Cool feature but unfortunately not useful for certain places,” another said, pointing out that they had to use the gym’s own app. “I tried with Planet Fitness and they said next time to use the app. So annoying,” another added.
Others pointed out that these issues may stem from certain memberships running constantly changing codes in a bid to prevent hacking. It remains to be seen if these problems will be ironed out.
